We all have a little Rascal in us. A monthly feature of who makes Avery, Avery. This month’s Rascal is Beth Machen, our in-house Graphic Designer!

What is your role at Avery?

I’m the in-house graphic designer. I work on everything from a poster for a pint night at a local pub, to the new Avery Lager can art, to a White Rascal truck wrap that will be seen driving around the country. I also do some photography for general brand images and events.

How long have you been at Avery and how did you end up here?

I’ve been at Avery for a little over 3 years. Before that, I was just a fan who spent many Saturday nights eating tots and drinking in the alley.

What were you doing before Avery? What’s your background?

My background is in photography and graphic design. I studied art at CSU, and before Avery, I worked for a company that sells dry goods, herbs & spices, and essential oils.

How has working at a brewery changed your life/made you think about the world differently?

It has definitely changed my understanding of the complexity of brewing. My only previous experience was with friends homebrewing, which didn’t seem like it took much effort, and large-scale brewing facilities like Coors. It has been really interesting to see all the opportunity for creativity and experimentation in craft brewing.

What is the #1 thing you love about the beer industry?

Free beer!

Do you homebrew?

No, but my roommate brews kombucha in the basement of our house. Does that count?

Favorite Avery beer(s)?

Favorite beer of all time has to be Salvation, but currently, it’s a tie between Avery Lager and Avery IPA.

Favorite non-Avery beer(s)?

At the moment, Tart Peach Kolsh from Ballast Point.

If you could create one personal pet-project beer at Avery, what would it be?
If we could make Scarlata Cucumis all the time I would be very happy.

Any upcoming trends that beer consumers should know/be excited about?
Moving some of our barrel-aged beers into 16oz cans is pretty cool. I think people will be excited to see that type of beer in a more every day, easy drinking package.

Weird hobbies that we should know about?
I'm currently in two Dungeons and Dragons campaigns.

What's your favorite new Avery beer label?
Vanilla Bean Stout and El Gose.
